Such a great post Dina and what a way to round out Women's History Month! And your MIL's book - she truly was a powerhouse. I'm so grateful that midlife has ushered in new opportunities that I could never have imagined. Mired in what society leads us to believe we should be doing by a certain age, it's been wonderful to explore and feel drawn to new possibilities. I'll definitely agree, we've come a long way, baby!

Thank you! And I could not agree more- I never imagined when I was younger that the world would open up the way it has- the possibilities, the opportunities, and the beautiful new connections and deep friendships. It's all been so life-affirming, and I hope that younger women will see that through Midlife Private Parts! Better with age...! And my MIL was honestly one of the most brilliant people I have ever known- she made some history herself!

During my parent’s divorce in the 70s, my mother experienced the same credit card issue — my father, from whom she sought independence, had to sign for a Mastercard. It was the foundation for her teaching me the value of financial stability and independence in my own life; this plays a role in a chapter in my forthcoming fashion essay collection as it shaped me immensely. You can imagine my reaction when an otherwise lovely beau balked about how much I’d spent on a pair of Trina Turk pants — expensive khakis (flat front, required dry cleaning) that were an investment in myself having risen in the ranks of my ad agency. It may not be part of the 1 Corinthians, but even at that young age I knew love did not mean telling someone what they could wear.

It's so interesting how much we are shaped around these issues- from a very early age, my mom emphasized that I should always be independent and able to take care of myself without relying on a man. It's pretty incredible that it took until 1974 for women to have some semblance of economic freedom in this country. And omg I can just imagine your reaction! Can't wait to read that chapter (and the whole damn book for that matter!)!
